I was thinking about this post last night when I was watching Lost. Most of the mythology aspects of the show ending up not being important to the show’s central plot. Everything non-character related (dharma, smoke monster, the island itself) were really MacGuffins. the whole story was really about character development and not the mysteries. I actually really enjoyed it. (of course, my slight disappointment in the battlestar galactica finale at the time I watched it helped temper my expectations…)
